ATTENTION, PLEASE

Some elements of home prep will be a chore, but the process should have healthy dollops of fun, too. Enjoy working alongside your partner, and don’t resent it if she’s too tired to help. After all, even when you’re both cleaning and hammering, she’s also growing a baby.

There’s certainly no harm in getting things on this “maybe-not-so-essential” list. So, if you have any doubts, get everything:

Bright stickers for glass doors, so neither the baby nor you (when you’re distracted) run into them.

Roll-up devices for window cords.

Latches to keep appliance doors (such as for the dishwasher and stove) closed.

Lock covers for the knobs on your stove and range.

A lock for your DVD, Blu-Ray, or VCR player. (My friend’s toddler put the VCR remote into the tape slot—seemed logical to her, but Dad and Mom never could fish it out.)

Grips to put over door knobs, making them easier for you to turn while carrying an infant.

A babysitter instruction book, like the Red Cross’ “Babysitter Training Handbook.” You can also fill in a template checklist from sites like gerber.com/allstages/parenting_advice/babysitter_guide.aspx. Just be sure you’ve described your way of doing things and your baby’s specific needs.
